So I've been watching my God Daughter all day. She's banned from any enjoyment. haha.
She is not allowed to use the phone, t.v, radio, video games, or the computer. She's been very well behaved today. She did her math homework and has been reading a book most of the day.
Not once has she asked to do something that is a part of her punishment.
My Psychology book says that punishment alone is not effective. It gives alternatives to punishment. One of them is a make up. In other words. The child is giving the opportunity to correct their error by making up for it. This is not what my parents would have done. But then again, when we were told NO, it meant NO. When we were told to STOP. We stopped. Of course we tested our parents to a point. But not at all to this extreme. Of course we talked back from time to time. But it's not like this. All my father had to do was raise his eyebrows and we knew he had enough and it was time to say, "sorry daddy".
Is it the kids of today? Are their personalities stronger than ours were? Do they get away with more at a younger age and grow to be disrespectful?
I just pray for the best. Because she's a good kid. She's just shooting out of her mouth lately as if she has the right to say whatever she chooses in any manner she chooses.
But today is a good day. I told her if she gets to page 200 of her book I'll give her $5.00....SHHHHHHH. I hope I don't get in trouble for that. Maybe I'll give it to her mother and tell her she can have it after she is off punishment. I think that's a good idea. I want to reward her efforts. But rewarding during a punishment may defeat the overall purpose.
